What is a film
simulation recipe?

A recipe is a named set of in-camera settings — a film simulation base plus ten to fifteen tuned parameters — that makes your Fujifilm render a finished look straight out of camera. No editing, no presets, no computer. The JPEG is the photograph.

Fujifilm ships each camera with film simulations — Provia, Velvia, Classic Chrome, Classic Negative, Acros and the rest — colour profiles built from the company's own film archive. A simulation is one menu line. It's a strong starting point, and it's the same starting point everyone else has.

A recipe takes a simulation and tunes the whole rendering pipeline around it: white balance pushed warm or cool, a tone curve bent toward negative-film softness or slide-film punch, grain layered on, colour depth adjusted. The same Classic Negative base becomes Portra's gentle gold or Superia's cool 90s teal purely through those surrounding parameters. The simulation is the film stock; the recipe is the film stock, the exposure discipline, and the darkroom, written down.

Look

Film Simulation sets the base colour science. Dynamic Range (DR100–DR400) decides how much highlight information survives — the difference between a sky with texture and a white hole.

Color

White Balance plus its Red/Blue shift is where most of a recipe's character lives — a +2 Red / −4 Blue shift is what makes a frame feel like golden-hour film instead of accurate digital. Color scales saturation; Color Chrome Effect and FX Blue deepen dense colours and skies without touching skin.

Tone

Highlight and Shadow bend the contrast curve — negative-film recipes soften highlights (−1, −2); punchy street recipes crush shadows (+2, +3).

Detail

Grain (strength and size), Sharpness, Noise Reduction and Clarity control texture — the difference between a clinical digital file and something that reads as film. Most recipes pull NR far down (−4) so grain stays structural instead of getting smoothed away.

Two more lines ride along as shooting guidance rather than stored state: the ISO ceiling and an exposure-compensation bias — film stocks were metered with intent, and recipes inherit that.

Finality. A recipe moves every aesthetic decision to before the shutter — the way film worked. You choose the look while reading the light, then the camera commits. There is no editing queue waiting at home, no "fix it later" that quietly means "look at it never".

The discipline compounds: shooting one recipe for a whole walk teaches you what that light does to that palette in a way sliders never will. And the photographs come back consistent — a roll, not a folder of one-off edits.

They don't touch RAW files — the recipe renders the JPEG, and a RAW+JPEG workflow keeps a neutral negative alongside every finished frame. They don't guarantee a specific photograph: light, lens and exposure move the result, which is why a recipe is a starting point with intent, not a filter. And no recipe makes a boring frame interesting — it makes an interesting frame finished.

No. A film simulation (Provia, Classic Chrome, Acros…) is Fujifilm's base colour profile — one menu line. A recipe is that base plus the full parameter stack tuned around it: white balance and shift, dynamic range, tone curve, grain, colour depth, sharpness. Same simulation, different recipe, completely different photograph.

They solve the same desire — a consistent look — but in the opposite place. A preset edits the file after the fact on a computer; a recipe renders the look in-camera at the moment of exposure. The JPEG that comes off the card is the finished photograph.

Never. A recipe only governs the in-camera JPEG rendering. Shoot RAW+JPEG and the RAW stays neutral — you can even re-render it with a different recipe later using the camera's built-in RAW conversion.

Every Fujifilm X-series and GFX body supports custom settings; what varies is the parameter set. Newer bodies (X-Trans IV and V) have the full stack — Classic Negative, Clarity, Color Chrome FX Blue. Each recipe on this site lists exactly which bodies run it unmodified.
