How to add a recipe
to your Fujifilm.
Every recipe is a set of in-camera settings saved into one of seven custom slots (C1–C7) through the IQ menu. Three minutes the first time, thirty seconds once your thumbs learn the path — and a couple of generation-specific traps worth knowing before they cost you a shoot.
- Dial in every image-quality setting from the recipe. Open the IQ (Image Quality) menu and set each line the recipe lists: Film Simulation, Grain Effect, Color Chrome Effect / FX Blue, White Balance and its R/B shift, Dynamic Range, Highlight, Shadow, Color, Sharpness, Noise Reduction, and Clarity (if your body has it).
- Open EDIT/SAVE CUSTOM SETTING. Press MENU/OK, go to the IQ menu (camera-and-sliders icon), and select EDIT/SAVE CUSTOM SETTING.
- Save into a custom slot. Pick a slot from C1–C7, choose SAVE CURRENT SETTINGS, and confirm with OK. The slot now holds the recipe's full image-quality state.
- Name the slot. On the X-Pro3 and every later body, select EDIT CUSTOM NAME and give the slot the recipe's name — seven slots of anonymous numbers stop being useful by the third recipe.
- Recall the recipe when shooting. Press Q and tap the CUSTOM SETTING tile in the top-left corner to switch slots — or use the mode dial's C positions on PASM bodies (X-S10, X-S20, X-H2, X-H2S) and the FS positions of the Film Simulation dial on the X-T50.
- Set ISO and exposure compensation separately. On dial-based bodies, custom slots store image-quality settings only. Set the recipe's ISO line and EV compensation with the physical dials — they are shooting state, not slot state.
On bodies with dedicated shutter-speed and ISO dials, a custom slot is an image-quality preset: it stores the film simulation and every IQ-menu line, and nothing about exposure. That split is deliberate — the dials always tell the truth — but it means a recipe's ISO ceiling ("Auto, up to ISO 6400") and its EV bias ("+1/3 to +2/3") are yours to set separately, every time.
The path: set every IQ parameter from the recipe page → MENU/OK → IQ menu → EDIT/SAVE CUSTOM SETTING → pick C1–C7 → SAVE CURRENT SETTINGS → rename. Recall it from the Q menu's top-left tile. If a recipe on this site lists your body under "Works on", every parameter it shows exists in your menu — no translation needed.
The X-S10, X-S20, X-H2 and X-H2S put custom slots directly on the mode dial — and those C positions store more than image quality: drive, focus and exposure state ride along. That makes them true one-click recipe switches, at the cost of fewer free positions (curate four, not seven).
The X-T50 and X-M5 add a Film Simulation dial with FS custom positions. The dial switches the simulation in one flick, but a full recipe is more than its base sim — white-balance shift, grain, tone curve — so build the recipe in a C-slot first, then assign it to an FS position. The dial then becomes what it looks like: a physical recipe selector.
Two hard limits, one famous trap. The limits: no Classic Negative and no Clarity — recipes built on either need substitutions (our X-T3 page covers what to swap). The trap: on these bodies the white-balance shift is stored per white-balance type, globally — not inside the custom slot. Save two recipes that both use Daylight WB with different R/B shifts, and whichever shift you entered last silently applies to both. The workaround is discipline: group recipes by shared WB shift, or re-enter the shift when you switch. From the X-Pro3 onward the shift lives inside the slot and the trap is gone.
AUTO UPDATE CUSTOM SETTING → DISABLE
Left on, every tweak you make while shooting is written back into the slot — a week later the recipe has drifted and nobody changed it. Disable it; make deliberate edits through EDIT/SAVE instead.
D RANGE PRIORITY → OFF
DRP overrides the Highlight and Shadow tone the recipe sets. Every recipe on this site assumes it's off and controls dynamic range through DR100–DR400 instead.
Shoot RAW+JPEG while you decide
The recipe renders the JPEG; the RAW stays neutral. Keeping both costs card space and buys you the right to re-render any frame with a different recipe later, in-camera, via RAW conversion.

Seven — custom slots C1 through C7 on every current X-series body. PASM-dial bodies expose some of them directly on the mode dial. If you shoot more than seven looks, keep the overflow written down or in an app and rotate them into slots as the light changes.
Generally yes, but Fujifilm's release notes occasionally reset settings on major updates. Back the whole camera configuration up first with the free FUJIFILM X Acquire desktop app — it saves every menu setting, custom slots included, to a file you can restore in one step.
Within the same sensor generation, yes — an X-T5 recipe transfers to an X100VI unchanged. Across generations you may need substitutions: X-Trans IV bodies lack Reala Ace and Nostalgic Negative, and the X-T3/X-T30 lack Clarity and Classic Negative entirely. Every recipe on this site lists the bodies it runs on unmodified.
On the X-T3, X-T30 and older bodies, the WB shift is stored per white-balance type globally — not inside the custom slot. Switching between two recipes that both use Daylight WB but different shifts silently applies the last shift you entered. From the X-Pro3 onward the shift is saved inside each custom slot and this problem disappears.
